 Great idea and performance January 6, 2009
This product worked great - as advertised. Unfortunately, Amazon's ordering site was somewhat confusing which cost extra expenses due to an unintentional double order. Take care clicking that web site!
Pumpity Pump,pump, pump December 31, 2008
Picked this up for small engine and hard to drain fluid projects. It seems to work well but hose is very stiff and curled out of box. I had to warm with a heat gun to straighten it out. This isn't going to work so well in the very cold. I only used it once so far on a snow blower. Didn't use the smaller extension pumped it about 8 times and it evacuated the oil in about 15 seconds. All but the last 6 oz. so I pumpity pumped the gurgling hose about 20 more times without luck. Maybe If I had used the smaller hose? It is built well, easy to set up and use. Springy hose flicked oil on me and my motor when I removed it though but now that's straightened out.
Mityvac great for oil changes December 28, 2008
The Mityvac 7201 Fluid Evacuator Plus I recently bought made changing oil very easy on my 1990 Mercedes 300D. The front spoiler makes it impossible to drive the car up on ramps, and previously, I had to jack up both sides, put in jack stands, get under the car, then unscrew the drain plug: a dirty job that left black oil stains on the cement of the patio.
With the Mityvac, you just stick a tube down the dipstick tube, take off the filler cap, and change the filter (on my Mercedes this is also done topside) and you are done. An oil change for my car costs around $25 more than the oil itself, so this will pay for itself in less than a year. Read the directions, though: you could find it ineffective if you don't follow them. And don't pump it up more than four five strokes beyond the suggested ten: too much vacuum could collapse the Mityvac, ruining it. About 30 minutes are required to remove 8.5 qts. When it's done, it makes a sucking sound like when you have finished a milkshake. This is the recommended way to drain oil, according to Mercedes Benz.
I have tried using pumps and a Topsider, but this device made it a lot easier. I have previously bought and used the mityvac brake bleeder, which also served me well.
Does what it should do December 8, 2008
I used this for oil change on CLK 430 and it worked great. Did a lot of research on oil change for the Mercedes line of cars and this is what the dealer does. They don't drain the oil, instead they use the extraction method. That's the reason for having the oil filter on the top of engine.
This model holds 8 liters plus, which is the amount of oil the CLK has, it is very convenient, and the extraction takes about 10-15 minutes. Couple of tips:
1. Warm the engine first, but not too hot to melt the plastic tubing. Since this is 0w40 oil, it is quite thick when cold.
2. Open the oil cap and the oil filter casing before extraction, this will help the process.
3. After the extraction, pour the oil in from the filter casing, this is much easier than pour into the valve cover. Much faster too.
I've used this three times already, and every time it exact all the oil in the engine. I even measured the extracted oil and it was what I put in previously.
