Snap rings (also known as circlips, E-clips or housing rings) are an essential component of many mechanical shaft, pin and tube assemblies. Although small in size (sometimes referred to as 'dinks' for their dinky size) they play a big role in preventing wheels, gears or other assemblies from sliding out of place. They stay in place so well that removing them can be an exercise in frustration and wounded knuckles - without the right tools.
